Synopsis
Based on Frank Wedekind’s ground-breaking and controversial play, Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s brilliant rock score and searingly emotional book takes the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century.

The original musical takes place 1891 – a time when grown-ups held all the cards. A headstrong Melchior and a naive Wendla stumble into each others’ arms, passionate and curious, while an anxious Moritz struggles to live up to the stringent expectations of society. With only each other for guidance, the group of young men and women travel the fraught and rocky path of adolescence, discovering their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way. An electric, vibrant celebration of youth and rebellion, Spring Awakening fuses issues of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch.

Moreton Bay Theatre Company is putting a new utopian meets dystopian twist on Spring Awakening. “We’ve set our production of Spring Awakening in a time where age is not defined by the amount of time you’ve been alive, but by your mental capacity. Humanity has gone as far as it can and has reverted back an archaic society, where the price of “Free Speech” is far too high and knowledge is believed to be too dangerous to be held by the masses.” – Pat James, Director
